Love Summer

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.  ~John Lubbock

Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.  ~Henry James
-----------------------------------------------

So, I must say that I LOVE the summertime.
Long Days. Warm Sunshine. Cool Nights. Family. Friends. Gardens. Flowers. Vacations.
Yes, I love summer.

This summer has been relaxing.  At the beginning of the summer I was stressing about my lack of work, and then about the lack of hours at my work once I found a job, but I have now decided that I am just going to enjoy this break.  It doesn't happen too often, and it's only until the end of August anyway.

(Side note: I actually sat down and figured out our budget for the fall.  Actually sitting down and making a plan helped me realize that I could stress less about money.  I find that pretty cool.  I'm grateful for this and this that helped me sort that out.)

Now that I think about it, back when I was stressing, it was still rather cold.  Ha, sunshine really does wonders for the soul.

Stephen and I have had a busy couple of weeks.  We've been restarting his photography business, and it's been a ton of fun!  We actually took pictures of some races, and at other activities.

I've still been crocheting a bit.  I made another elf hat for my cousin to use with her photography business.  I also made Stephen a hat, and I'm starting on my first blanket.  It's fun, I'll have to post pictures when I finish.

This 4th of July weekend was so much fun!  Stephen and I were able to take off work the Tuesday after the 4th of July weekend and really enjoy our time their with family!

We arrived Friday evening just in time for some fireworks with the Dahl side of the family.

Funny (scary at the time) Story:  So, as my uncle was lighting fireworks he stacked on top of another.  When the top firework went off it fell over.  It was an aerial firework, so it shot really far.  It shot once at the across-the-street-neighbor's fence (leaving some fun black marks), and once down the street.  It continued to move around towards the onlookers.  My Uncles were standing on the driveway, and it shot at them! (One of my Uncles had burn marks on his socks and shoes, and one of the cars has a few scars)  It was getting really scary because the next shot looked like it was headed towards the children (who of course were sitting closest).  Some of the children got up to run, but others didn't.  The firework went off one last time, straight at the children.  However, miracles happen, and the firework that was headed straight for all the children shot into the curb and bounced up.  Crisis averted, and no more fireworks were stacked.

The next day we got to spend all day with Stephen's sister Julie, her family, and some of her in-laws.

We climbed up to Donut Falls with the whole family.  It was a fun hike.

Then we went up to silver lake, where there was still enough snow for a snowman.

After spending some time with Julie's family we made it back to Riverton in time to see their fireworks.

Sunday we went to Church with my Grandma, and went to visit my Aunts Susan and then Elaine.

Monday morning, we kept with tradition and went to Jim's with some of my mom's family.  It was fun.  Then we went to meet up with Julie and her family.  Lindsey and Jason stopped by as well.  After a wonderful dinner and some fun, some of us got ready to go hike Mt. Olympus.

We started at a little after 6.  It took us roughly seven hours to get up there and back down in the dark.
It wasn't easy, but it was pretty cool.

At the beginning I was pretty chipper.

The views were pretty.

The mountainside was cool.

I think it was probably at about mile 2 or a little past that, that the trail became increasingly steep, and I became a bit less chipper.  My climbing muscles obviously need a bit more working-out.  However, despite this, we made it to the saddle, which was awesome.  The view over the other side of the mountain was amazing.  David and Micheal (more experienced hikers than the rest of us), made it the rest of the way to the peak, but the rest of us didn't make it before dark, so we didn't attempt it.  It was nice to sit and look over the valley, and watch the little fireworks go off.
On the way down I was having a hard time, because my toes kept jamming into the front of my shoes.  Boy, am I grateful that I have such a kind, patient husband.  He helped me down.  On the way down we found a giant salamander and a skunk.  The skunk scared me so bad.  Luckily I saw it in time to back away, and we did not get sprayed.  That would have been so horrible!

However, sometime near two in the morning we got home, very tired, but feeling rather accomplished.  We slept in until 11 or so the next day.  Then I helped Grandma clip some roses and we went to visit Grandpa's grave.  It was nice to go visit, especially this weekend because he was so patriotic.  Then it was time for Stephen and I to head back to Rexburg.

It really was awesome to spend so much time with family!  I have more to update, but this is plenty for one post!  I'll share some more of our adventures with Julie's family soon!

Crochet

“If more people knitted and crocheted, the world would see fewer wars and a whole lot less road rage.” -Lily Chin
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've taken up a new hobby: crocheting.  I'm really enjoying it.  It's fun to create something while not making (too much) of a mess. I used these tutorials to teach me the basics and then I started going!
I've mostly been making things for little heads, because they are cuter.

Here are my first creations:

This is a little headband I made, as modeled by my adorable niece.  I found the pattern for this one here.

These two hats were made using this pattern and the flowers were made using this one.  I had trouble getting the size right at first so the very first one is for a baby doll (with a very small head :-P), but the second one turned out just right.

This one is my very favourite.  I found the pattern for this one here.  It's so stinking cute.  I can't wait to see it on Dana's baby boy tonight.

I'll probably keep posting my creations here.  I think my next project is either to make Stephen a hat or to try making a blanket.  We'll see.

Bird Watching

Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best. -Henry Van Dyke

My favorite weather is bird-chirping weather.  -Terri Guillemets

We have two bird feeders outside our house and I have taken to watching the birds and trying to identify them.  So far I have seen these birds on our feeders:

It's amazing the variety of birds that show up on the feeder.  Right now there is an Evening Grosbeak, a Pine Siskin, and a Goldfinch on one feeder, and there is a Black-headed Grosbeak on the other.  I enjoy it :).  Here are some pictures of some of the birds courtesy of Stephen Beckman:

Talents

“Talent without character is more to be dreaded than esteemed.” -Richard L. Evans
----------------------------------------------

I've been thinking a lot about the importance of talents.  Everyone is given different talents.  However, as the quote above illustrates, a talent is worthless unless it is used for something good.

Sometimes talents are naturally evident, sometimes they are harder to find.  Talents sometimes are things that we hardly recognize as talents.  It took me a while to realize that loving people, caring for children, being a peace-maker, teaching others, and other qualities can all be talents.

A woman told about how she found talents that she never knew she had:
"Suddenly my insight came. I can act on the desires and interests that I have and thereby reveal and use my talents in small ways."

Finding and developing talents can be hard work.  However the Lord often sends people to help us recognize our talents.  He also will give us opportunities to discover new talents through assignments and callings.
I really liked the following quote:
“Improving one talent often helps us develop other talents.”

Sometimes when developing a new talent it can be so difficult that it may seem like we don't have a talent for it at all.  The thing is, sometimes things that are difficult at first will eventually become our greatest strengths.  In the parable of the talents in the New Testament  all the men were given different talents, some were given more and others less.  However, the expectations were the same:
“More was expected from the man given many talents than from the man with fewer talents, yet all were expected to increase the talents they were given.”

So, when it comes to developing talents we aren't supposed to be satisfied with what comes naturally or easily. The hard work will pay off:
“President Grant himself was fond of saying, “That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do is increased” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1901, 63).”

Remember the promise that the Lord made to those faithful men who increased their talents in his parable:
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21)

My husband is working on developing his photography talents.  Check out his website here.

Done and Done

My father always told me, "Find a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life."  ~Jim Fox
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Miracles happen.
I've been spending this last week preparing myself for the job hunt.
Thursday there was a job fair.
The night before I got myself prepared.  I printed off my resume, and did research on all the school's that were listed to be at the fair.  I figured out all the schools that I would like to work for, and made a list of questions I had for each of them.
So, off I went.  I talked to all the school's I was interested in and had one tentative offer.  Then I came back later to talk to another school district about an opening they had in preschool.  They said that they needed a permanent substitute for the rest of this year, with the hopes that this substitute would be able to continue on as the teacher in the next school year.
It sounded perfect! I got an interview for Friday.
I went and interviewed on Friday and I got the job!
Stephen and I have been so blessed.  We both have local jobs that should last for the rest of the time that we are here in Rexburg!

Following this wonderful news, I graduated on Saturday.

I woke up super early and got ready, and had Stephen take a few pictures before we left.

Then Stephen dropped me off to wait in the giant line for commencement.  I found my friend Kellie, and she helped me feel more comfortable.  Then Stephen and my dad and brothers walked to the BYU-I center to meet my mom and Grandma.

Commencement was good.  Stephen didn't see me walk in, but I got to walk out right past them, and that was exciting :).

Afterwards it was a zoo, so we gathered together and went to the Hart where we were going to have convocation.  We took some pictures and then I went in.  I got to sit next to friends, and Brother Thurgood (a sealer who works at the Rexburg temple when Stephen and I got there) conducted the meeting.  Brother Cloward and Sister Anderson were there as well (faculty I worked with during my degree).  It was really great. I was excited that I knew so many people.

Family!

So that was my day!  It was super fun!  Afterwards we got to spend some time together.  We went out to lunch, fed the ducks, played games, and went swimming!

P.S.
My mom got a cake for Zak and I because we are having a joint graduation/birthday party.
This is what we got.  Feel free to laugh.
